| Description: |
On January 30, 2009 at 7:00 p.m., more than a dozen of the Napa Valley's top student musicians will perform for a concert benefiting New Orleans hurricane victims. For the past two years, a group of local high school students from Napa High School and Vintage High School traveled to New Orleans to help rebuild a community center owned by Morris Brown AME (African Methodist Episcopal church). The church, located in a low-income region of the city, purchased the building in August 2005 with the hope of providing a safe place for children to interact, learn educational and vocational skills, and provide senior citizens with free meals. Two weeks later, Hurricane Katrina flooded the community center causing considerable damage and leaving the building in an uninhabitable condition. This March, more than 30 high school students from Napa will travel again to New Orleans to help complete the rebuilding of the community center. While their fellow students will be relaxing during their Spring Break, these students will be working long, hard days to serve a community in need. Each student going on the trip will pay their own way through fundraising, after school jobs and even Christmas money. However, in addition to the cost for flights and transportation, the group needs to raise an additional $30,000 for building materials. To help fundraise for the trip, the students are hosting the 2nd Annual, A Night of Music for New Orleans, a concert showcasing the top, classically trained, local teen musicians. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $10 for students and can be purchased in advance by calling 707-226-7372 or by visiting www.nvoh.org. For more information on the concert or giving opportunities, please contact Simon Biasell, director of youth ministries at the First Presbyterian Church, at 707-224-8693. |
